Shenfield High School

On Monday 16th September, Shenfield drew Saffron Waldon in the U13 Girls Essex Cup Cricket final. After sealing two previous victories against this school in both U17 boys, and U15 girls, Shenfield were looking to make it a hatrick!

Shenfield lost the toss and so were asked to bat first on what was a very wet wicket. Shannan Drewe opened the batting, and scored a very useful 17 runs. She ran very well between the wickets, before finally losing her wicket in the 16th over. Captain Poppy Timson came in at 4, and batted beautifully for her 21 not out, seeing her side for a very competitive 97 for 5 off their allotted 20 overs.

At the interval, the heavens opened causing tea to be taken early. When the rain relented, Shenfield took to the very wet field to face appalling conditions. After 3 overs, Saffron Walden had raced to 23 without loss until the rain intervened once more. With conditions worsening, bowling and fielding was difficult. Despite this, Timson changed the game with a match winning spell of bowling, taking 3 crucial wickets in a devastating 3 over spell which turned the game around. Ellen Hoad took an important 2 wickets for 12 off 4, including 2 wicket maidens! Sadie Kirrane played her part by taking 2 wickets in as many balls. Abbott, Clark and Knapp maintained an excellent line and length despite the wet conditions, being backed up well in the field with some excellent catching by Southcott. Shenfield sealed the victory in the penultimate over, sparking scenes of celebration. England’s Lydia Greenway was there to congratulate the team, and award them with their County medals. Well done girls, that’s 3 out of 3 for Shenfield!
