Shenfield High School

The Shenfield U18 basketball squad are current Essex Champions having defeated Shoeburyness basketball academy in a superb performance in the final last season. However 4 of the starting 5 from that side have now graduated from Shenfield so when they faced Shoeburyness at the start of the 2013-2014 season last week Shenfield went into the game as big underdogs. When SHS lost big man Tommy Oliver to a serious ankle injury in the first quarter Shenfield were surely looking to play for nothing more than pride? Tommy's younger brother Jack came off the bench to fill the void and made over 20 rebounds in the game to play a key role in the Shenfield team.

The boys played at fast pace and with legendary basketball coach Humph Long on the Shenfield bench inspiring the team they stayed close to Shoeburyness the whole game. Ben Mathews led by example with football academy player Andy Freeman making a huge impact on both offensive and defensive ends. In the last quarter it was Alex Mason that caused the biggest threat scoring 8 points in the quarter including 4 clutch free throws to see Shenfield home by  just 1 point! Huge thanks to Humph Long for his time and expertise. The boys and coaching staff are so grateful to learn from a man who has done so much for British basketball over the last 60 years. This squad and the younger teams will all look to take this success into the rest of the season in their bid to maintain the school's reputation as the lead basketball school in Essex.
