U'13 indoor success – Essex Champions and regional finalists

The Shenfield U'13 girls defied the Cricketing odds to win through and represent Essex in the regional indoor finals held at the impressive Ageas Bowl, home of Hampshire CCC. This remarkable achievement is even more impressive when you take into account that the team had not played any Cricket until joining the school in September. They won through the preliminary rounds impressing with their excellent running between the wickets and accurate bowling.

Despite this we entered the County Finals with the main aim of development and allowing the girls to practice their skills in a pressured environment. Expectations were low, but our standards as always were very high and this proved to be the difference! We beat Chelmsford County High School in a tight Semi-Final and then comfortably beat Robert Clack School in the final, after they unexpectedly beat hot favourites Holmwood house in the other Semi. This was a remarkable achievement given the fact they were playing in a U'13 competition against girls not only a year older but with many more years Cricketing experience. Essex I know have been running sessions in Robert Clack school to try and develop their girls Cricket, with Holmwood house making it their main summer sport for girls.

The regional finals were held in Southampton which meant a long journey! Despite losing all 3 games the girls were competitive in all of them, losing on the penultimate ball in the final game against the eventual group winners. It was a huge occasion for them and as it was such a new environment their nerves were clear, however this will almost certainly see them prosper in years to come.

Coach Abson-Bennett remarked 'These are an outstanding group of girls with huge potential, they have the attitude and talent to become a formidable team. They have a great support network who invest time in supporting them wherever we go, it is a fantastic environment to be involved in. All 12 of them have joined me down at Hutton CC where we have nearly 50 girls training each week. This will allow them to get valuable hard ball experience which will only compliment their indoor game.
