Shenfield High School
Year 7 girls crowned Essex Futsal Champions.

Shenfield's young year 7 girls took part in the county rounds of the National Futsal competition on Thursday. Missing two of their key players, due to other sporting commitments for the school in an athletics competition, the girls took to the courts of Hornchurch Sports Centre for their first ever Futsal action.

First up, the girls faced Greensward Academy beating them 4-0 Shannan Drewe scoring all the goals, they then faced Barking Abbey and won 2-0 again, Drewe with both goals. After a two game break the girls played Sacred Heart, winning 4-1 with goals from Ellen Hoad, Chloe Eastwell and Drewe. Next up were a team the girls beat in the quarter final of the Essex Cup, Francis Bardsley. A lack in communication and concentration saw Francis Bardsley go 1-0 up, captain and goalkeeper Sophie Clark made some excellent saves before the girls got their heads down and came through as 3-1 winners, Olivia Gibbons opening the scoring with a great volley, Eastwell and Drewe getting the others.

The competition was a round robin format and the team with the most points would end up being crowned champions, so the girls knew how important it would be to win all games. Their penultimate game was against local rivals St Martin's whom they beat 2-0, with goals from Gibbons and Eastwell before finally facing Passmores in the last game of the day; a hat-trick from Hoad, and goals from Eastwell, Drewe and Maizi Garwood ensured the girls ran out 6-0 winners.

Winning all six games ensured the girls were crowned Essex County Champions and will now go on to represent Essex in the regional finals in Welwyn Garden City in June. As always the girls were fantastic ambassadors for Shenfield High School, and winning yet another competition provided them with another trophy to add to their already well-equipped trophy cabinet.

Teacher Miss Smith said "The girls played fantastically well, especially in light of the fact that this was their first attempt at any competitive futsal game. We have high hopes for them in the next round, having already come 3rd in the national 5-a-side competition."
