Shenfield High School

Shenfield High Schools year 7 Rugby team made the short trip over to Anglo European In dreadfully damp conditions. After a late mix up with the minibus, which meant Miss Leborgne stepping in to save the day, Shenfield arrived with very little time to prepare.

They started slowly but soon got into their stride with Lewis Ridley in particular making some exceptional tackles. As they began to settle down the hard work in training paid off with some effective rucking, that lead to an increase in possession. Shenfield drew first blood with some excellent movement of the ball, leaving Josh Portway to burst through the oppositions defence and score a well deserved try.

With Shenfield starting to dominate the rucks, Scrum half Tim Mason made some excellent decisions enabling Portway to score his second try after a powerful, mazy run through the Anglo defence. With the light fading fast, the first half whistle was blown and the visitors took a deserving 10-0 lead after the decision to have no conversions was made.

Anglo started the second half well and after some missed tackles they scored a deserved try to bring the game alive. However, unlike previous fixtures heads didn’t drop and with a real team effort the away side began to dominate once again. After yet more excellent rucking and movement of the ball down the line, Portway sealed a memorable evening securing his hatrick of tries with yet another brilliant run through the defence.

With the light almost gone, Lewis Ridley ran in a well deserved try after making a couple of crunching tackles to regain possession for his side. The last play of the game was called and with this the influential Tim Mason intercepted the ball and ran in Shenfields 5th try and with that the final whistle was blown.

A thoroughly deserved victory for a rapidly improving team and with more hard work in training and lessons they could become an unlikely force to be reckoned with. Overall a great team effort with everyone contributing, however man of the match has to go to the talented Portway for his 3 tries and outstanding tackling.
