Shenfield High School

On Thursday 29th November Shenfield High School hosted an invitational basketball tournament. A large number of schools were invited from around the area, and we had good numbers attend. There were seven schools in total and the tournament was aimed at introducing the girls back into the Basketball season with some friendly competition.

The Shenfield girls had been so successful last year, progressing to the Essex Cup final; they were keen to get involved and compete in the tournament. Shenfield started the competition with a game against Boswells, who they beat convincingly 12-2. From this, the girls went from strength to strength and managed to finish the whole tournament at the top of the League table unbeaten, having met Great Baddow and Eastwood along the way. Ashleigh Holland showed excellent fight and determination, and some skilful ball handling from Ellie-Mae Guest meant we even managed victory against our local rivals St Martins.

The top two teams from the League then progressed into a final to be played on full court. With a small squad of six; due to injury, the girls played their hardest in the final. Captain Tonie Abbott had injured her back during the group stages but managed to battle on in the final. However, despite this, St Martins proved just a little too tough an opponent on this occasion. Shenfield narrowly lost in the final but showed extremely good promise for the season ahead. When the squad are back to full strength I have no doubt we will match last year’s success, or even better it.
