Shenfield High School

Modern Foreign Languages

Philosophy and Aims

The learning of a language helps to prepare pupils for a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are often carried out in a language other than English. Despite the advent of Brexit, trends in international commerce and globalisation means that pupils need to be equipped with the skills needed by industry in the international workplace. We aim to develop pupils’ confidence and competence in language learning as well as to exploit cultural links and opportunities. Once the skills of language acquisition are mastered in one modern foreign language, the same skills are transferable to other languages.

In Year 7 and 8 all pupils are taught Spanish. Although some students may have learned other languages in their primary schools, we build on previous language learning by drawing from their previous experiences. Students study a variety of topics to give them a solid understanding of the language. In Year 8 some students will also begin to study French alongside Spanish as an additional modern foreign language. Students continue with learning Spanish until the end of Year 9, as do those students who have been learning French as an additional modern foreign language from Year 8.

By the end of Year 9 students will be equipped to take their studies in Spanish and/or French further into KS4 to gain a GCSE in these subjects, should they wish to choose these options.

Students currently in Years 10 and 11 have chosen to continue their language studies in either GCSE German or GCSE Spanish, dependent upon their prior language study at KS3. Students can also take their Spanish studies a stage further by opting to do Spanish A Level.
