Shenfield High School

National Under 15 Girls 'Chance to Shine' Cricket Champions September 2017

Shenfield High School prides itself on having an outstanding PE Department.    In 2014, Ofsted stated that sport at Shenfield High School is “very strong.”  The PE Department provide an inclusive, broad and balanced PE curriculum that caters for students of all abilities. The GCSE PE, A level and BTEC Sport grades are amongst the strongest in the school and compare very favourably against national average data.

Students are encouraged to attend the huge range of extra-curricular clubs that take place every day before school at lunch and after school. Shenfield High School’s extra-curricular programme is focussed on ‘Maximising Participation and Developing Excellence’. We maximise participation by making all non-academy sports sessions available for all abilities and these clubs are very popular. Thursdays Rec Night has been running for 21 years, for example, is very well attended and provides students with the opportunity to participate in a range of activities from badminton, table tennis, trampolining to swimming in a friendly and social environment. The school also run fixtures for B, C and D teams in football and netball where the demand allows to provide competitive opportunities for all students.

Shenfield has won 12 National Sport titles in the last 17 years as well as a significant number of county and regional honours. At elite level 1st team (U19) sport we have been Essex Cup Champions or Runners-Up in football  and cricket for several years.  (See Roll of Honour for further evidence of the sporting achievements) This domination of Essex sport reflects the quality of provision for sport at Shenfield High School. The outstanding sporting provision was recognised by the School Sport Magazine, placing Shenfield in the top 100 state schools in England in each of the 4 years that they have measured extra-curricular sporting success. The Cricketer Magazine has also recognised Shenfield as one of only two State schools in England to be in the Top 100 Schools for Cricket in the country. The MCC have acknowledged this achievement with an invite for an annual fixture against the school and the first one is to take place in June 2018.

This excellence is almost beyond comparison in state schools across different sports in the entire country. This is only achieved through a dedicated and thorough coaching programme from an experienced team of PE teachers and coaches. Students are entered into a vast range of competitions at district, county, regional and national level.

With the Football, Cricket and Junior Sports Academy programmes now providing further elite sporting opportunities the school has a very large number of students who not only enjoy the outstanding extra-curricular provision but also act as positive role models for other students to aspire to follow.

The school is also driven to promote PE and Sport through the whole Brentwood district through the Shenfield School Partnership. The School Games Organiser based at Shenfield organises over 50 competitions/events each year to provide opportunities for primary students to compete. The school also organise and run the Mid-Essex Schools District Football programme which provides elite football opportunities for all students in our district from U11 (boys and girls) to U15 sides. This District football programme is undertaken in partnership with Colchester United FC who have a long standing connection with the school. Colchester United’s Frankie Kent was a very successful student at Shenfield High School and we are hopeful that a number of other Colchester United Academy players at Shenfield will follow his path into the first team and a successful professional football career.

We are thoroughly dedicated to driving standards in PE and Sport as we know students that enjoy and show commitment in PE also learn valuable skills that contribute to making them healthier and more committed to their academic studies.
